Our Third Mobile Business Intelligence Study has been completed and was published on October 31st! Each week I facilitate a weekly Twitter TweetChat focused on Business Intelligence. It takes place every Friday at 1:00 PM Eastern and covers a wide range of topics. Participants include users, IT professionals, practitioners, other industry analysts and even a few vendors.

Solution to Case Study from November 18th #BIWisdom TweetChat

On November 18th, we had a lively discussion surrounding the case study provided by fellow #BIWisdom "tribe" member, Peter Evans.

Leading up to Peter revealing his solution, there were quite a few excellent suggestions for how one might handle a similar situation. Below is Peter's solution:

"My solution was to develop a use case and present this to the CEO and the team and then introduce my solution to the CIO as a tactical solution – giving them the opportunity to develop a strategic solution.

Because of my approach I was allowed access to an instance of an RDBMS server and could therefore build a complete application based on a the desktop database tool available connecting to an RDBMS Backend which was used to connect to the banks BI semantic layer along with their operational systems data. Using desktop database tool I built a load and transform system with the ability to import data via the desktop to be added to the end results. Reporting was done via automation of the desktop spreadsheet application via the desktop database tool and auto population of a dashboards and individual and group reports which were then uploaded via code to a web server application and also emailed to the recipients as pdf files."

Scenario:

Large International Retail Bank with Corporate BI System + Operational Systems + Externally generated survey reports and Operational Metrics. Having just been taken over by an external bank the Service Quality Team had a requirement to generate reports and a service quality scorecard to improve the business customer perception and profitability within the marketplace within a six month period.

You are hired specifically by the Business as opposed to the IT Department as there was already friction between the two teams due to past BI implantation failures – You are replacing a team of developers who had been brought in from the new banks IT Department for a three month period – and had left the unit with an Access database which had to be manually changed each month to the point of the non technical business users re-writing access queries and then running them to get each months reports – and the database was growing exponentially due to very poor data management.

Your problems are how to deal with an IT Team who thinks they are under threat not just from you but also the IT Department of the incoming bank. The Business unit employees were also very skeptical as they were made up of both analysts and managers and thought that if the process is automated they could lose their jobs, and finally since you are working for the business you have very little access to any IT infrastructure to make it all work.

When we started researching the Mobile Business Intelligence (BI) phenomenon over a year ago, we knew we were on to something important, but it wasn’t obvious where the journey would take us.

This findings document marks our third published report on the subject since mid 2010 and offers the clearest picture of progress to date. Having over a year’s worth of data to compare and contrast has been especially helpful in developing a higher fidelity; real-world perspective!

To be clear, we believe that we’re in the midst of a profound shift toward Mobile BI (and mobile computing). We believe this paradigm shift will affect everyone and have as much impact as the Internet did, over time.

This latest findings report shows strong evidence that Mobile BI is taking hold - broadly. Although current adoption, plans and perceptions may vary, this is a global phenomenon - across all geographies, industries, functions and organization sizes.

There are also more choices for organizations than there were in 2010. More and better mobile platform options have emerged – with an abundance of new tablets. And BI software suppliers have invested heavily, offering a much more complete menu of mobile options.

However, there are significant risks and challenges along the way. A proverbial “moving target” of hardware and software standards presents difficulties to both customers and suppliers alike. And, the risk of privacy and security breaches remains at the forefront of industry challenges.

Nevertheless, the Internet is an apt analogy. How do we work differently now than before the Internet “revolution”? What we take for granted: our ability to effortlessly find, create and share information and to readily collaborate with others – was impossibly difficult before it.

Likewise, what will be the impact of Mobile BI - with information and insight literally following us - wherever we are; whenever we need it? It will change the way that we work, our ability to respond more quickly and to align towards common purpose. This notion of pervasiveness has always been the mission of BI, which may now finally be realized with the catalyst of mobile computing.

So what should organizations do with this information? To quote Pasteur, “Luck favors the prepared”. In this spirit, we must all prepare for and embrace Mobile BI, or risk getting left behind.

We hope that this findings report – and our other research – will help guide the way and better increase your chances for success with Mobile Business Intelligence.

Case Study for Upcoming #BIWisdom TweetChat

At last week's #BIWisdom TweetChat, we decided to try a different format for this coming Friday. Instead of open chat, we're going to analyze a customer case study and suggest possible solutions.

Our inaugural case study has been contributed by one of our eminent "tribe" members, Jacqui Taylor, Founder and CEO at FlyingBinary.

Case Study: What would you do next?

Background: A large global brand with staff worldwide.
The existing BI infrastructure is one of the large vendor packages which has been in place for over 10 years with the expected Data Warehouse style deploy. Standard ETL and Reporting processes exist. They have approximately 3 Terabytes of data to consider.

Client: The Head of IT
We had been asked to supply a resource to ‘straighten out’ the business users. We were allocated a budget of 7 days to produce some self serve BI reports in order to establish the WIP (Work In Progress) stock position.

Assignment: How did we do?
After 5 days we had not been able to establish WIP stock position, discovered data integrity problems in the data warehouse, clients not invoiced, incomplete sales pipeline data, most of the business users were using Excel extracts to run their business units. Additionally, we were approached by an additional 15 business users whose reporting requirements have not been met by the existing BI infrastructure.

What would you do with the remaining 2 days of the assignment?

Research Nugget from Our Impending Mobile Study

As we get ready to close data collection for our Mobile Computing & Mobile Business Intelligence Study, I thought I would share another research "nugget" with you.

In this analysis, I created a crosstab of major geography and expectations for numbers of exclusively Mobile BI users.

As you can see, North Americans appear to be the most aggressive in plans surrounding exclusive Mobile BI usage, followed by EMEA and APAC.

Of course, we're still collecting data for another 8 days - until September 30th! And, the larger the sample the more interesting the crosstab analyses will be.

So, we ask you to do your part and spend 10 minutes completing the survey. Not only will you be making an important contribution to this body of research, but we'll send you a complimentary findings report later this year!

Cool Comments From New Mobile Computing Study

Hello Folks!

As you know our new Mobile Computing & Mobile Business Intelligence market study is now underway and we're getting some fascinating comments.

Here are a few of them:

Mobile BI is very important to us. Many here are mobile and not tethered to an office, so the ability to remain connected to the business / BI while away or traveling is very important.

For me mobile BI is nothing more than BI on the go. People don't talk of mobile email, as it is just expected. BI will go exactly the same way. It goes where I work. It's not mobile, it just is "BI ".

We are trying to think of BI not as a complex, expensive system, but as a pervasive form of corporate-wide reporting and alerting for every employee. Mobile BI will enhance this concept. But, the solution needs to be $5 per user per month and cannot have a $1M back-end system.

Integrity: You either have it or you don't

Hello Folks!

These past few weeks I have been thinking a lot about integrity and ethics. To my way of thinking, integrity - being honest and truthful - is paramount both personally and professionally. And, generally, I believe that most people and organizations embrace this concept.

However, recently, I encountered an exception. Here's what happened:

Several weeks ago I visited a certain Business Intelligence software vendor's offices where they briefed me on their latest product release. During my visit (during which the CEO was present) it became clear that they had been actively using some of my copyrighted content without permission.

To be clear, I make a lot of my content available for free - on my blog, through social media and through the trade press. Had this vendor asked me, I would have directed them to one of those sources. Instead, they chose to use content directly from a copyrighted study - without permission and to which they were not entitled.

When I challenged them, they apologized, told me it was an oversight, and assured me that they would properly license the content. Ultimately, they reneged on that commitment and removed the content instead of licensing it.

At the heart of the matter is an issue of integrity. Had I not happened to visit them, they would have continued to use my intellectual property without permission. This scenario is even more surprising since this very issue (IP protection) remains a daunting software industry problem.

Some colleagues have encouraged me to expose their identity. Instead, I am using this as the impetus to add a new "Integrity" metric to the Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study (TM) for 2012. In this way, all vendors' customers will have a chance to share their opinions regarding the honesty and truthfulness of vendors - including the one that I have been referring to.

In conclusion, I believe that we should all strive to conduct ourselves with the utmost personal and professional integrity. And, we must insist upon it from others. Those lacking integrity (including BI software vendors) should be shunned.

OpenSource Business Intelligence Category in Wisdom of Crowds BI Market Study

We're making great progress in analyzing data from our 2011 Edition of the Wisdom of Crowds BI Market Study (TM) and are on track for the release of findings, to enterprise licensees, in mid-May.

There will be a number of enhancements over last year and I wanted to let you know about an important one.

In the past we placed OpenSource BI vendors into existing market categories of "Established Pureplay" and "Emerging BI Vendors", based largely on size (revenues).

However, OpenSource BI vendors share common demographics, which are unique to them. As a result, for 2011, we'll break out OpenSource BI vendors into their own distinct category. This will better enable the direct comparison of these vendors - which we believe is both more useful and appropriate.

Analysis Phase of Wisdom of Crowds/ Some Demographics

After 6 weeks of data collection we've officially concluded data collection for the Wisdom of Crowds BI Market Study (TM) 2011 Edition!

It's been an exciting process, resulting in a very rich and interesting data set - with 50% more data collected than last year! And, some surprises have already started to emerge!

Here are some of the final demographics:

Geography: We managed to collect a good sample from most of the major geographies around the world. Although a bit US-heavy, there's very strong representation from EMEA and APAC.

Industries: We had broad participation from a number of vertical industries, including: Technology, Financial Services, Health care, Retail & Wholesale and Manufacturing. Typically we haven't seen notable differences between industries. However, this year there are some worth examining - especially in the areas of licensing and technology.

Departments/Functions: Although the strongest response came from IT professionals, we collected a significant sample from Sales & Marketing, Finance and Executive Management. This will allow us to compare and contrast the plans and attitudes of the IT Department vs. Business users. First blush, I'm seeing some significant differences between functions - especially related to various technologies.

Organization Size: When looking at size of organization, we were able to recruit a great sample of small, mid-sized and large organizations. Although the differences aren't quite as striking as other splits, there are some important differences moving from small to mid-sized to large companies.

We'll be performing the in-depth analysis of the data over the coming weeks and plan to release the findings to enterprise licensees sometime in early to mid May.

More Preliminary Analysis from 2011 Wisdom of Crowds BI Market Study

Here's some additional preliminary analysis from the data that we have collected to date for the 2011 Edition of The Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study (TM).

For this analysis, we asked respondents whether they were using their BI vendor's latest product version. As you can see from the chart above, slightly more than three quarters said that they were using the most current version.

For the other quarter, reasons for not moving to the latest release included: in process now, current version suits needs, version "too buggy", no time to upgrade/ not a priority and version not available for international release yet.

We still need your help! As you are probably aware, we are in the midst of collecting data for this important study. Last year we collected data from 500 organizations. A Research Nugget From Upcoming Wisdom of Crowds BI Market Study

Here's some preliminary research from the data that we have already collected for the 2011 Edition of The Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study (TM).

For this analysis, we asked respondents how many BI software tools they currently have in their organizations. As you can see in the chart below, the majority reported either 1,2, or 3 tools. Our goal continues to be delivering innovative insight into the Business Intelligence and Performance Management markets.

With that in mind, many of you know that we've just published our second Mobile BI Market Study Findings. You'll, no doubt, be reading various press releases and might even attend one of a number of associated webinars in the coming weeks and months.

Even though we just published the Mobile BI Study and it's fresh in our minds, we've started to work feverishly towards the 2011 Edition of the Wisdom of Crowds BI Market Study (TM). Last year's inaugural edition was a huge success and this year we're expanding it to add even more value!

User Importance of Mobile Business Intelligence:

As with the original study, we asked our respondents to indicate the importance of Mobile BI to their organizations and found that it remains largely unchanged from six months ago (Figure 5). That this level of interest has been sustained, as organizations have deployed Mobile BI to users, is both significant and encouraging.

And, as suggested in the original report, we believe that we are in the midst of a fundamental “paradigm shift” for Business Intelligence.

Some Background on Our Impending Mobile BI Market Study Update

In September 2010, we published our landmark Mobile BI Market Study. This report was based on a study of nearly 200 organizations from around the globe. In it we explored the perceptions, intentions and realities surrounding Mobile Business Intelligence from a number of perspectives and helped to shed light on an emerging market dynamic.

During the ensuing six months from when we initially collected our study data (June-July 2010), the market for Mobile BI went through dramatic change: new platform entries (e.g., Android tablets), evolved BI software offerings and increased user experience and deployments. These changes, along with the suggestion of clientele, encouraged us to update our research and document this phenomenon. The result is a Mobile BI Market Study Update, which is slated to be published in late January 2011.

Method:

To understand the changes afoot regarding Mobile BI, we re-surveyed a select group of original respondents and examined differences from the initial study data. We also conducted interviews with six of these organizations to get a deeper sense of their plans and requirements. And, we asked several new questions which deal with emerging issues surrounding Mobile BI.

As with the original study, we invited the vendor community to update their product profiles with their latest mobile features - and will include updated rankings based on mobile platform and BI feature support.

The result will be a compelling set of findings, which highlight the rapidly changing landscape for Mobile Business Intelligence.

Findings and Analysis Report:

Like the original study, the capstone of the Updated DAS Mobile Business Intelligence Market Study ™ is the findings and analysis report. In it we compare the before and after perspectives from a number of original study participants – providing important insights into shifting attitudes and plans vis-à-vis Mobile Business Intelligence.

Below are some sample analyses which will be included in the updated study. The actual report will contain all relevant labels and keys.

Mobile BI Platform Priorities:

Since the original study, several new platforms have been announced and/or shipped. These include the Samsung Galaxy, Windows 7 Phone, and RIM Black Tablet. This, combined with a more experienced customer base, has contributed to shifts in platform priorities. As such, we take a look at which mobile platforms are most important for Business Intelligence – six months ago and today (Figure 5).

User deployment/penetrations plans:

As organizations have moved from planning to deployment of Mobile BI, their assumptions and plans have also changed. In the findings document, we will explore how their plans have changed and what user penetration for Mobile BI might look like in 2011 and 2012 (Figure 6).

We also examine how requirements for BI functionality have changed in six months (Figure 7).

Among the new questions that we asked of respondents was their inclination towards enterprise systems/applications versus Software-as-a-Service and “cloud” computing (Figure 9).

Customer Profiles:

Six organizations were interviewed and will be profiled in the findings report – describing their experiences with Mobile BI during the past six months and highlighting key changes in responses from the original study. Industries represented by these organizations include: government, hospitality, manufacturing, retail and wholesale.

Updated Vendor Rankings:

In addition to the detailed capability tables offered in the original DAS Mobile BI Study, we will provide several vendor/product ranking charts, based on mobile platform and feature support (Figure 10).

EMA Partnership:
Many of you probably read the posting here and the press release announcing our partnership with EMA Research to conduct a study focused on Business Intelligence Professional Service Providers. That effort is already underway, with a targeted release for late winter 2011.

Updated Mobile BI Market Study
Simultaneously, I am working on an update to our recent Mobile Business Intelligence Market Study. The original research was done last summer and much has changed since then. In this updated study, we're taking a close look at how things have changed in past six months. We're working with a number of the original respondents for before and after comparisons and are also conducting some in-depth interviews.

We're also re-surveying all of the vendors to understand how their mobile capabilities have evolved in the past six months.

A Teachable Moment in Customer Service

As many of you already know, I will be conducting a webinar this Monday on Mobile Business Intelligence. The content is derived from my latest Mobile BI Market Study Report, which was released just last month.

In support of this event, I decided (after much deliberation) to purchase a new mobile device - specifically a mobile tablet. And, no, it's not an iPad.

But, this posting is not about the device. Instead, it's a story about the disastrous customer service associated with acquiring this device.

On Wednesday, I called the device manufacturer's sales line to order my new mobile tablet. The sales person was personable, knowledgeable and professional. I was quite impressed. Of course, I needed to receive the device ASAP, in support of Monday's event and impending road-tour next week. So, I requested (and paid for) overnight shipping. Since I was ordering after 1PM, I was told that the device would be delivered on Friday. I soon received email confirmation and an order number. I thought I was all set!

But, wait! While still on the phone with the sales person, I logged onto to their system and noticed that it indicated shipping via "ground" and delivery in 3-5 business days, not Next Day. My sales person assured me that the system was incorrect and that it would indeed be delivered on Friday.

The following morning (Thursday), I checked their system again. It still indicated 3-5 business days. I called and spoke to another sales person, who once again assured me that the package would ship Next Day Air and I would receive the unit on Friday, as promised. When asked about the online status of 3-5 business days, I was told that their internal system was accurate and the customer (my) view was out of date.

Later that day, I received shipping notice from the vendor's automated system, indicating that the unit had, in fact, shipped via ground and would be delivered in 3-5 business days - not next day. As you can imagine, I was rather upset. I immediately contacted my sales person, who still insisted that the package might still arrive on Friday and that the system must be in error.

With tracking number in hand, I verified this information the shipper's system and confirmed that the package would indeed be delivered via ground - and would not arrive until the following Monday (or Tuesday), NOT FRIDAY.

The last email that I received from my sales person (although apologetic) focused on the point that this error wasn't his fault. He put it into the system correctly and had never seen this happen before. To quote him: "it is simply not possible for me to charge for shipping without selecting it in our system. The only explanation I have is the same as before---a system error somehow failed to register the Next Day shipping as the shipping option once the order was completed." His only solution was to refund my $16 for overnight shipping, which didn't address my issue. He made certain to copy his boss.

So, with that lengthy explanation behind us, let's examine what should have occurred:

1) When the customer (me) alerted the sales person about the shipping method discrepancy, he should have sought help from someone with more experience. Fact is: systems typically do what they're told to do and the indicated status is probably accurate.

2) When the customer calls back and still indicates a problem, don't patronize him and do nothing. On Thursday there was still time to fix the problem. At that point they still could have shipped out another unit for delivery by Friday.

3) Don't blame the system for a customer service problem. The customer doesn't care who's fault it was. Acknowledge the mistake and come up with a solution.

As a final note, when I was tweeting about this issue, the vendor's social media customer service rep reached out to me and tried hard to fix the problem. In fact he had them ship another unit to me for overnight delivery. However, they (apparently) don't have the ability or didn't select "Saturday Delivery" as an option. So, the second unit will likely arrive at the same time as the first unit.

The old axiom of "A stitch in time saves nine" comes to mind. Fix a problem right away - when it's easier and there are more options - and before it gets out of hand creating (in this case) a customer service nightmare.

I was speaking to a client the other day and was explaining why our research studies are different than all others and thought I might share this with you.

At Dresner Advisory Services, our key differentiators are: Experience, Objectivity, and Inclusion.

Experience: As some of you already know, I spent 13 years at Gartner, where I was a Research Fellow and Team Leader for Business Intelligence. During my tenure there I conducted numerous market studies, was responsible for the BI Magic Quadrants and created and chaired its BI conferences. I have been in the industry for 30 years and in the BI segment for 21. I have also published two books on the subject. All of this experience and judgment is applied in all phases of our market studies - delivering - what I hope is - a more complete and useful perspective on the market - and one that will save clients time, energy and money!

Objectivity: Unlike other organizations, we do not pre-fund market studies with sponsor money. Mobile BI Platform Priorities

Mobile BI Platform Preferences:
It was important to learn which mobile platforms were at the forefront of user priority (and investment). Although there were a few respondents that mentioned Palm and Nokia (Symbian), the great majority specified one of five major mobile platforms: Apple iPhone and iPad, Google Android, RIM Blackberry, and Windows Mobile. For each of these mobile platforms we asked respondents to place them in priority order: first through fifth.

As specified in the figure below, in overall sample, RIM Blackberry remains the top priority for Mobile BI, followed by the iPhone. However, when looking at the combination of 1st and 2nd priorities together, the iPhone stands out as the single strongest platform for Mobile BI. This is followed by the iPad, Windows Mobile and Google Android. It should also be noted that Windows Mobile was the top choice as the 5th priority platform and Android the top 3rd priority – giving it “dark horse” status.

Another Insight from our Mobile BI Market Study: User-perceived Drawbacks

Here's another interesting insight from our impending Mobile BI Market Study. This one focuses on user-perceived drawbacks of Mobile BI:

Not surprisingly, there remain a number of perceived drawbacks of Mobile Business Intelligence. In Figure 13, we see that “security” is the number one issue. In particular, organizations are concerned about lost devices and the sensitive data that may be on them. This is followed by “form factor”, which refers to phones versus tablets. Below are a few comments from respondents which further articulate some of these points:

A large telecommunications company:

“The obvious risks are allowing the data to escape from a mobile device that is properly locked down. This already happens today as we email reports directly to these devices. This is an important thing to keep in consideration when we make data easier to access”

A large retailer:

“Given the limitations of bandwidth and screen size, it can be tough to boil down everything users need in a mobile-sized package. The risk is that they rely too much on the scaled-down analytics without really digging into an issue using a full-fledged BI suite.”

An Insight from Our Mobile BI Market Study: User Perceived Benefits

Here's one of the interesting insights from our impending Mobile BI Market Study. This one focuses on user-perceived benefits of Mobile BI:

As a final set of questions, we asked user respondents to share with us their perceived benefits and drawbacks of Mobile Business Intelligence. In Figure 12 we see that the most popular benefit is “pervasive access”, followed by “fast access”, “flexibility”, “better decisions” and “better access”. Below are a few comments from respondents which underscore these statistics:

A large health care organization:

“Benefits are access to the information anywhere, but more importantly, enabling the right information to show up at the right time. In our environment, being able to access the data as discussions are taking place in conference rooms, etc. is absolutely key to successfully using that data.”

A small manufacturing company:

“Few people in management sit at their desk to make decisions. Decisions are made on the floor and good BI tools are crucial in the decision making process.”

A large consumer products company:

“Provides our leadership with the ability to see their key business drivers anytime, anywhere.”

Hello Folks!

We've now entered the data analysis phase for our Mobile Business Intelligence Market Study and we're excited about some of the early indicators!

During three weeks of data collection, we were able to recruit 200 user organizations from around the world to participate.

In addition, 18 out of 18 BI vendors provided input regarding their mobile BI strategies (see related posting).

So, for the next few weeks we'll be analyzing data and generating the findings document, with the goal of publication in early to mid August.

Once again, thanks to everyone that has supported this project. I'm confident that the results will help to shed some light upon a very important and timely topic.

An early indicator from our ongoing Mobile BI Study

Hello Folks!

Thought I'd publish one early finding from my ongoing Mobile BI Market Study.

So, here is a top-level trend which indicates the importance that respondent organizations associate with mobile business intelligence.

As you can see, only a minority of organizations (18%) consider mobile BI to be "critical". Most consider mobile BI either "very important" or "somewhat important".

Of course, the "devil is in the details" as they say. In other words, when you start filtering the data by geography, industry, size of company, role, etc. the picture varies dramatically.

I have also been surveying BI vendors regarding their current and future mobile BI capabilities and will compare and contrast these from vendor to vendor and with user plans. The complete findings and my analysis will be published by early August.

Data collection will end on July 9th.
